Taviani was an Italian politician, historian and economist. He earned a gold medal as a member of the Resistance, and was one of the heads of the Partisan Movement in Liguria.

He was a member of the Council of State and the Constituent Assembly of Italy, then a member of the Italian Parliament from 1948 until his death, holding the position of Minister several times, and was one of the leading exponents of Democrazia Cristiana. As a university professor, he published economic studies and important works on Christopher Columbus. As a journalist, he worked with numerous newspapers and journals.
