After earning a degree in law, Pratesi entered the world of journalism.

A Catholic, Pratesi contributed to the weekly magazine “Settegiorni” (which he directed with Ruggero Orfei), as well as the daily newspapers “Avvenire” and “Il Popolo” (of which he became director in 1963). In 1966 he won the Saint-Vincent prize for journalism. He was elected in 1976 with Raniero La Valle and other Catholic intellectuals who ran under the Italian Communist Party. In 1979 he was not elected but appointed to take the place of Alberto Asor Rosa, resigning in December 1980 and conceding the post to Luca Pavolini. In 1979 he became co-director of “Paese Sera”, taking over as managing director in 1982, a position he held until 1984. In 1988 he was one of the founders of “Avvenimenti”.
