A well-known scholar of the evolution of religious matters and sociological problems in Italy, Monsignor Burgalassi was also an enthusiast of the history of Pisa and its vernacular. He was born on 2 August 1921 in Bibbona and was ordained as a priest in 1946. He taught sociology for many years at the Pontificia Università Lateranense and the Catholic University in Milan. In 1981 he was appointed full professor of sociology at the University of Pisa where he taught until 1996. He was a fellow of numerous academies and cultural institutions, and authored numerous essays and treatises in his field.
