This is the original archive of the Historical Archive and contains documents relating to the politics and writing of Luigi Sturzo during the crisis of the Liberal state, the advent of fascism, Sturzo’s years of exile and post-war years.

Collection size: Approximately 1,500 envelopes

The archive is divided into the following three sections:

Corrispondenza (Correspondence)

This includes documentation pertaining to the work of Sturzo over his lifetime, with particular reference to correspondence, and is chronologically organised into four parts:

  • Part I 1891-1924: 25,000 documents catalogued analytically on paper inventory
  • Part II 1924-1940: 25,000 documents catalogued analytically on paper inventory
  • Part III 1940-1946: 25,000 documents catalogued analytically on paper inventory
  • Part IV 1946-1959: 840 document envelopes currently being catalogued and entered into digitalised analytical inventory
Scritti (Writings)

This includes the short writings of Sturzo with particular reference to journalistic articles in all versions.

The section is divided into:

  • “Early Writings” 1885-1924”: 800 analytically catalogued documents. Paper and digitalised inventory
  • “London Writings 1924-1940”: 468 analytically catalogued documents. Paper and digitalised inventory
  • “American Writings 1940-1946”: 449 analytically catalogued documents. Paper and digitalised inventory
  • “Later Writings” 1946-1959” approximately 1,000 awaiting cataloguing
Opere (Works)

This includes unsorted documents with particular reference to monographic writings, namely the many works and essays written by Sturzo over the course of his life.

Available for consultation: “Correspondence” section: parts I, II, III; “Writings” section: "Early Writings 1885-1924" series, "London Writings 1924-1940" series; "American Writings 1940-1946" series.

Tools: paper and digitalised summary and analytical inventories, indexes of names.

This section of the Archive also includes the printed inventory of Part I (1891-1924) published in two volumes in 2008 by the Directorate-General for Archives of the Italian Ministry for cultural heritage.
